I am looking for a print dictionary to use when off the computer.  I
have the OED on disc but find myself overwhelmed thinking about shelling
out close to $1,000 for the book.  Would anyone care to recommend a good
dictionary?  I looked at the reviews for these on Amazon:

1.  Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged
2.  The New Oxford American Dictionary
3.  Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Deluxe Edition
(Webster's Unabridged Dictionary
4.  Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, Fifth Edition

If you are in the U.S., American Heritage Dictionary of the English
Language is the best.  The current (Fourth) edition is available online
free; http://www.bartleby.com/61 so you can check it out.  It has Usage
Notes scattered throughout, written from the comments provided by the
Usage Panel http://www.bartleby.com/61/4.html (participants who have
since died are listed at the end).

These (I have both)

1.  Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged
4.  Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, Fifth Edition

Also, be on the lookout for The Century Dictionary in the used market.
It is the best dictionary ever made, and so long as you are dealing
with classical usage. It was about 10 volumes, (five in India paper).

I have the OED, printed.  Bought for $10 at a book fair.  It is
useful, certainly worth $20.

But, I use http://www.hyperdictionary.com/

It is very good.  It even has macacca in it -- the only
word that George Allen has ever used that I had to
look up.
