When did the expression "Way to go" (and "way to [other things]) first
become current? Any citations?

I *think* we used it when I was in high school--class of '53.  At any rate,
it's been around for a loooong time.

Sort of related: When I was in college in '65 I wrote a letter to the
school paper, including the phrase "Hats off to xxxxx".  He revised it
to say, "My hat goes off to xxxx".

I first heard it in the 1970s, used by American colleagues. I expect it's
