"Lies" (but not as in "Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics").

"Lie (lay, lain)" is intransitive (has no object).  "John lies down for
a nap after lunch."  "The book lies on the table."

"Lay (laid, laid)" is transitive (requires an object).  "John lays the
book on the table."  "John lays himself down for a nap daily."

"John lays the book on the table.  It lies there."
"John laid the book on the table.  It laid there."
"John has laid the book on the table.  It has lain there."

Oops.  Correction alert:

> "John lays the book on the table.  It lies there."
> "John laid the book on the table.  It laid there."

"John laid the book on the table.  It lay there."

> "John has laid the book on the table.  It has lain there."

And I thought I learned something about grammar in Kentucky.

Remember, you're representing all of Kentucky here.

I think Usenet changed "lay" to "laid" after it left my computer the
first time.

The servers in Kentucky might well do that.

My server is in Atlanta.  Hmm, yes, that could explain it.
