It may be a moot point, but 've been trying to decide whether "as" is
necessary or optional in the following sentence:

"Once its paper was analyzed, the document revealed itself [as] a
forgery "

In addition,  I've been trying to decide whether the above sentence is
better or worse than the following :

"Once its paper was analyzed, the document revealed that it was a
forgery "

I would therefore appreciated your opinions.

"To be"

"Once its paper was analyzed, the document revealed itself to be a
forgery "

I'm not very keen on "revealed itself". What about

"Analysis of its paper revealed the document to be a forgery".

I think it's optional, although probably preferable.

That sounds bordering on the unidiomatic to me. Wouldn't it be the
analyst or report writer, rather than the document itself, that did
the revealing?

How about "Once its paper was analysed, the document proved to be a
forgery"?

In my opinion, "as" is necessary.

Even though it really says the same thing as the first one, this version
looks like a silly personification.  Don't use it.

You should use "to be."
