It's time once again for me to take an intermission of a few days.  I
expect to return in a bit more than a week, by which time it will be
2007.[1]  So to all of you who haven't kill-filed me (yet), a most
festive and enjoyable turn of the year, and best wishes for 2007
(we're all going to need them).

In short, Happy New Year.

[1]  I still can't get used to having the years begin with something
other than 19.  Can't anything be done?

You could begin them with 57. Does that help?

You would then be three months or so too late. How about beginning with 14
such that New Year gradually moves backwards through the seasons?

Prosperity, health and satisfaction for the New Year. Only a bit over 15
hours to go, but I won't be staying up to check.

As Freddie Flintstone and co are painfully aware, you have to get up
early to beat the Australians.

I'm many hours behind the Kiwis.

Yes, but it will take 16,993 years for the solution to be implemented.

As a toddler back in the 1930s, I learned something about addition
and subtraction.  When I was old enough, I wanted to know whether I
might live until the next century.  I subtracted my birth year 1931
from 2000 and got 69.  If I could just live to be 69 years old, I
would see the next century.  In the mid '30s, it was not very likely
that I would live to see 69.

And here I am in 2007 at the age of 75.

I made it!

But my twin sister didn't -- she died (of non-Hodgkins lymphoma)
shortly after our 65th birthday in 1996.

I'm your near twin, also born 1931 though only just - New Years Eve is my
birthday.

There are two siblings here in the US who are twins.  One was born in
2006 and the other was born in 2007.  Born minutes apart.

I am almost one year your junior -- December 29th, 1932.  I recall
calculating the same things a long time ago, deciding that my chances of
seeing the year 2000 were fairly good, but not guaranteed.  Well, I'm still
kickin'.

The most remote date-related thing[1] I can remember calculating as a child
(back in the sixties) was my fortieth birthday, which would be my first within
my lifetime that would actually fall on Easter Sunday....

Nearly eight years ago now it was, and it wasn't the big deal I always assumed
it would be...it'll happen again on my 51st; we'll see how that goes....r

[1] It's possible--I really don't remember--that I actually believed what
Criswell predicted.
