I met him once - I went to a recording of Mastermind in about 1976.  
He'd accepted an answer which was wrong (I think it related to
impedance and resistance) so after the recordings were finished I
went over to tell him.  "Oh dear, we'll get letters", he said, but
the single mark wouldn't have made any difference to the result so he
wasn't too bothered.  He was very ordinary and pleasant and perfectly
happy to chat to a student who just wandered up.

I still have a BBC "Reserved" card which he signed for me.
