Paul Hose - 22 Jan 2007 16:32 GMT When I bend my finger backward or forward pretty hard, esp at the joint to the palm, it makes a sound "toc". In English, how will you call that sound and could you explain why it sounds like a crack ? thanks

"Cracking your knuckles" is what we ussed to call it. Mothers always warned you that it causes arthritis, but I seem to recall that that's an old wives' tale.

Ummm...a quick google suggests that the specialists' view is that it appears not to do harm. Here's a few hits off the first page of google returns: http://www.physorg.com/news64162917.html http://orthopedics.about.com/od/arthritis/f/cracking.htm http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/bio99/bio99443.htm

We called it either "cracking" or "popping" the knuckle...I think the difference lay in whether you do one joint at a time or several at once....r

The thumb would lock up and had to be painfully pulled back into position, a course of cortisone injections helped to get back to normal.

We also call it a "crack" or "pop" when a chiropractor manipulates you. According to popular opinion this is the noise of bones popping back into place. Actually, the noise is made by trapped pockets of gas.
