"Smart Test"

Here's a little test to see if you're smart or stu^H^H^H not.

Or maybe it's a test to see how *quick* you are -- there's not much time
to mull over the questions.

I'm smarter than average, by the way.

You're smarter than me... but did you have a four-year-old singing the
Bob the Builder theme in your ear while you attempted the test?

40.6% smarter.

I'me beginning to suspect one of those large/XXL/humungous condom-size

That's not how averaging works.

avg(1, 2, 3, 87000) = 21751.5

You're thinking something like 'median'.

Or perhaps of a Bell curve (normal distribution) that predicts a mean
plus or minus standard deviation. The highest point is the mean, not
the median, so the mean intelligence (100) is the dividing line
between 50% of the population above and below the mean. This
theoretical mean is also the median, but not by design.

At one time the dateline adverts asked you to describe your appearance
on a scale that went from "very attractive" all the way down to
"average".

18.5% smarter, and I agree with you.  It's like the fact that over 99%
of all people have more than the average number of fingers.

And it's not a "smart test" in the first place; it's a trivia quiz.

It certainly doesn't detect those who are smart enough to have Flash

I think the people from this group taking the test might be raising the
average.  I see that someone got a "40.6% smarter than the average" result.
I got a "40.3% smarter than the average" result.  I don't see how that sort
of difference could happen without the average's having been changed by the
results.

to the two about beer....r

It was a little US-centric, but I still managed to be 29.7% smarter
than the average.  Whatever that means.

Although I'm curious to understand why knowing some obscure pop song
or where Bill Clinton comes from gives an indication of smartness.

I agree. 51.5% but I've always been a good guesser.

Me too, although I few of the questions specific to American culture or
pop culture I had to guess. I missed about 4 questions by stopping to think.

Is something happening for the rest of you that isn't happening for me?...I know
I'm getting most of them right, but I have no idea what kind of average I made
on the ones where I guessed wildly....

For all we know, whoever made up the test may have misidentified some of the
answers....r

Getting them all right nets you a rating of  62.4% higher than average.  I
had to look up the language spoken in Pakistan, Carlsberg beer, and the
Mitsubishi question.

The "all correct" rating will obviously change as more people take the test,
so you may not get a 62.4% rating.

Getting them all wrong gets you a rating of "100% stoopider than average"....

Was anyone else misled by the ticking clock symbol beside the answers?...one
would expect someone who got a certain number right in a shorter time to have a
higher IQ score...however, it seems the test is not timed as the clock would
suggest....r

Ahh! Perhaps the one posing the test was checking to see who took it
as having a time limit on the answer. I know I did, and being on
dial-up, the timing was variable, sometimes being up to about 6
seconds, and sometimes less than 2 seconds. I ended up just stabbing
at any answer that looked right, and doing it as soon as I caught the
gist of the question. I know for sure I got quite a few wrong, and was
surprised when I ended up with a "25% smarter" or so.

I got zero. Apparently I'm not smart enough to figure out what to do
