Well, I would wish you a happy vacation, but since you won't be able

But he might read all the posts when he gets back, so maybe "we hope you
had a happy vacation" is in order.
In the meantime, many of us will be wishing that we, too, were on a
beach somewhere, though many of us would, of course, take a laptop with
us...

The thing that's got me is: when _is_ Labor Day"? Howard hasn't even
called the election yet.

For some of us, every day is labor day.

But if someone better educated could kindly inform me when Labor Day is, I
could start counting. (yes, I know I could look it up; I'm just too lazy).

But it should perhaps be further explained that it moves - it's the
first Monday in September.

Aha! So you *were* paying attention, although it's white *anything*.

So it's an above the knees rule too, then?

Kind of a movable clambake.

I think the rule covers everything or almost everything but shirts and
underwear, for both ladies and gentlemen (but not brides). Gentlemen
may wear white dinner jackets from Memorial Day (last Monday in May)
to Labor Day. And may call them tuxedos.

I was with you up to the last sentence. Do gentlemen really call white
dinner jackets tuxedos? Musicians certainly don't -- it would too easy to
show up at the gig in the wrong monkey suit if we did.

Really? I thought tuxedo = dinner jacket = black tie and tails =
white tie, with no possibility of ambiguity (and monkey suit = tails,
with some possibility that it could also mean a tux).
I don't move in the circles where such things are talked about, so I
can't claim any expertise on usage. I was just trying to avoid laying
down the law for once.
