Or, instead of Carol or Caroll, make it Carole.

Tommy, but he was Steele with an "e" and he rocked as well as rolled.

Stahl is steel. There has already been a guess for "Evita". I just
don't get the reference to female, although I do know that German
nouns have gender.

An assembly of hintmatter.  Given Carl, steel and rope, Carl Stahl the
steel wire rope manufacturer with an Evita division seemed worth a
punt.  Die Unternehmensgruppe Carl Stahl is of course feminine.  As
for her brother:

Bruder Stahl in deiner Hand
Marschierst in fremdes Land

Sprich! Wo ist dein Gewissen
Doch dein Weg kennt keine Wiederkehr

Gefallener Held!

Not to my taste, nor any name.

Carla, feminine form of Carl.

Googling will find you a few women called Carl, but I've yet to find one
who revealed the name of her brother. You might get somewhere looking
for a Carl who was tied up at the end of her rope, but I have to say
that I had no luck in that direction. Cognates for Carl (Karel, Charles,
churl, etc.) have only led me in the masculine direction.

Googling got me a female Carl, in some chatroom or other.  Her
brother's name was Ray, according to another chatter, and "r" is at
one end of "rope"; but somehow I don't think that's interesting enough
to be right.

I tried ships.  But after a promising start, finding a ro-ro vessel
called the Carl W F Borgward, I ground to a halt on discovering he was
the only boy among twelve sisters.

Still, if it's him, the answer is "He (or, in terms of the ship in
question, she) didn't have one."

Well, you are way ahead of me there. I was mainly thinking inside
the men vs women box: Carl meaning 'free man', Carla, symbol of Venus.
So that all dogs go to heaven, but women are from Venus, brother Mars.

By the way, I had been to the masculine departments, such as Irish:
Séarlas. Scottish Gaelic: Teàrlach. Welsh: Siarl. Dutch: Karel, C(h)arel.
Scandinavian: Karl. French: Charles. Spanish: Carlos. Catalan: Carles.
Portuguese: Carlos. Italian: Carlo. Polish: Karol. Czech: Karel. Finnish: Kaarle.
Hungarian: Károly. Lithuanian: Karolis. But there was no bell to ring.

Okay, so here goes, her brother's name is Charles Bingley

Wouldn't it be "Carle", then?  At the end of "rope" is "e".
Therefore, I guessing "Eric Carle", the designer of the eggs at the
White House Easter Egg Roll and an author of children's books.

Maybe not quite too-late, if the Committee is prepared to be flexible.
I stumbled into a belated thank-you for commenting that verbal music
was the link between Swinburne, Bombadil, R. Knox and P. Rupert (and
M. Vallejo), justifying the link by saying that Knox sometimes
preached in metrical prose.  Jerry pointed out the TO reason, his
well-known stealth limerick, and said he hadn't been aware of the
metrical-prose factor.

Since that time, I have been searching desultorily for the source of
my statement, with no success.  I did a great deal of googling on that
question, using many different combinations of terms, and saw
something, somewhere, about his style that I thought justified my
statement; but now I find that, not only is that indication
unretrievable, but Knox's sermons show no trace, that I can see, of
rhythm.

If I had been posting an answer to the question instead of a casual
comment on Nick's answer, I would have gone back to look for that
evidence, probably failed to find it, and killed the post once again.
Under the circumstances, I feel uneasy about accepting that sheep --
but the dear little creature should not be left wandering the pastures
of Limbo, especially now that the place does not exist.  In all
justice and kindness to an orphaned beast, would the Committee not
consider granting it to Katy for her genial* and only slightly
mistimed answer to a really, really hard question?

"En principe, oui," and I admire your sportsmanship, but Katy's answer
was after a hint that I wouldn't have given while sheep were still at
stake.  Your sheep is neither here nor there (nor in Limbo), in my
perhaps not sufficiently humble opinion, as you're not the only
shepherd enovinated for the T. O. answer without the T. O. reason.

On the other hand, I hate for QZERO to go to waste, and we can't use
it again (or at least I have no intention of doing so), so I think
there could still be a Katahdin for that question, which is free not
only of numerals but also of spaces and punctuation.

I, too, celebrate this sportsmanship, but honesty compels me to admit
that I'd never have got it without that hint - and also that, given
the hint, I'd have thought almost anyone else could have got it too.

That settles it, I guess.  Little Iphigeneia's fate is come upon her,
and there will be a virtual barbecue sometime soon in my virtual
backyarden.  Yer all virtually invited, and your flocks; a selection
of grasses will be available for those who prefer them.

OK, now I understand the question and answer,
but the pre-dictionary hints still throw me.
What was with the cartoons and songs and ...?

I mentioned rope and Michael used the word "fumble", which should be
clear at least in hindsight.  I assume "La Cucaracha" was for the
chorus, which mentions "marihuana" (and there's also a pun on
"roach").  I don't know from British children's TV shows.

And how did the Lone Ranger get involved?
