The First Annual AUE Celebrity Superlative Quiz:

Since we've just begun a new calendar year, I thought it would be fun to make a
quiz for the AUE to see how much I've taught you all during the past year.  I
am calling my quiz the "AUE Celebrity Superlative Quiz" because I will ask
everyone to take this quiz and, for each question, order the celebs listed from
"most" of the superlative to "least".  This will test your understanding of the
usage of the superlative and see how much celeb knowledge you've taken from
interraction with me during the past year.  It will also provide the newcomers
a fun experience with English and will encourage people to realize that this is
a *fun* place, and learning is fun and worthwhile, rather than allow newbies to
view this as hostile, unfriendly terroritory.  So, please, everybody, complete
the following quiz to the best of your ability:

Do you really mean 'jail', distinguished in most American jurisdictions
from 'prison' in that jail is where someone's put while awaiting trial,
and prison is where he's put if convicted?

I don't distinguish.

They don't count.  Jesse, because he's racist; Andrew, because he's pointless.

So it wasn't Modern European History, either.

Or 1970s American pop culture.  "And in other news, Generalissimo
Francisco Franco is still dead".

From a May 2002 column by Hal Block (in the Cincinnati Enquirer):

When Casey Stengel gave lectures on baseball history, much of
which he witnessed firsthand, he was fond of closing his speech by
saying, “You could look it up.”

       And you could.
===================

With the resources we have today, you should have no trouble finding the
answer to your question.[1] You could probably even find the source of
the "still dead" statement. It's tempting to think you have no real
interest in learning. I hope that is not the case.

[1] However, I am a bit surprised you do not know it already. No World
History in high school?

Well, the 70's is over.  The 90's is my time.  I went to school in the 90's, I
had good credit in the 90's, and Michael Jackson was black in the 90's!

Michael Jackson ceased to be noticeably "black" around 1987, certainly
by 1991, as you can see in the "Photographic History of Michael
Jackson's Face" at

   http://anomalies-unlimited.com/Jackson.html

Indeed, while I don't remember the context, I recall a Hum Sex[1]
lecture in which the prof showed a then-recent picture of Jackson next
to a picture of him from the late '70s or early '80s, with the comment
that the "before" picture was that of a "perfectly normal looking,
attractive, young black man".

Checking the Usenet archives, there's a post from 1994 that says

(Did someone say "1983!"?  I thought so.  The last time the
Islanders won the cup, Reagan was president and Michael Jackson
   was black.)

            http://tinyurl.com/2m9xn

That seems to be about when the jokes started, but they mostly carried
the implication that "back when he was black" was already a long time
ago.

I meant to add that this lecture would have been in '86 or '87.

I *love* that website!  I can't believe you posted that here!  That has just
made my weekend!!  In 1987, he was going for the Sigourney Weaver look and by
1991, he was "LaToilet"!

But, anyway, my joke about MJ was sampled from a hilarious ghetto black woman
who was on Star Search last year.  of course, she used "80's" in all of the
places above where I used "90's".  I guess MJ *was* white during the early and
mid-90's, before becoming Asian during the late 90's.  Now, he's slowly
evolving into a Hispanic, if you look closely.

Wow!  I wonder what she had to say about MJ's sexuality?!

Not much that I remember.  It had to do with changing one's appearance
to meet societal norms of attractiveness, if I recall correctly.  And
Professor K is a "he", by the way.

If you look at the 1987 picture at

  http://anomalies-unlimited.com/Jackson.html

he doesn't yet look bizarre, he just doesn't look black.  He's changed
his nose and his cheeks and lightened his skin, but if you didn't
know where he started out, you'd probably see him as a relatively
attractive young white or mixed-race guy.  It was with the next
changes that things started getting weird.

(And I'm not sure if it would have been the 1987 or the 1985 picture
that would have been the face shown in class.)

I don't know what you've smoked today (literally), but he's most definitely
*not* human-looking by '87.

But *who* that's black would *want* to be white?  Most *whites* want to look
black.  I look at MJ's original pic and I see a *hot* black male!  It just gets
worse from there.

There's a black "Michael Jackson" in the movie "Bugsy Malone", made in
1976. Bonnie Langford and Jodie Foster were in it, too. I wonder if it's
the same guy?

IMDB says it's a different one, but it's his only credit, as is the
case for most of the child cast with the exception of Scott Baio and
Jodie Foster.  (It was Baio's first credit.)  The singer Michael
Jackson would have been 17 when the film was made, which would have
made him a bit older than the rest of the cast, I believe.

But just *as* gay as all the rest of the cast, in all possible "gaynesses".

I wasn't sure of the real MJ's age. The one in the film plays the saloon's
sweeper-up, and looks about 8 or 9. Foster was a very cool 14, with that
look already in her eye! I hadn't seen the movie since it was first
released, and had forgotten how good it is. Bought a copy via Ebay
immediately.

Probably, but how do you not know of MJ?

I already told you. I don't follow show-biz, except when it intrudes into
*real* news.

I was laying slabs with a reluctant 15-year-old boy the other day. As we
bent over together, grunting and heaving in the mud and the rain, he
suddenly exclaimed: 'This so gay!'

Do I need a solicitor?

It sounds as if the soliciting bit is already over.

You'd have been better off using a trowel.

That depends.  What's the modern sense of "laying slabs" and why was
he reluctant?

Joey will know, I'm sure, but he's busy perusing Rey's oeuvre at the
moment. In the meantime there's Urbandictionary.com, which gives the
following yoof definitions of 'slab':

1       (adj.,adv.,v.) generally refers to the overt appeal or lasting
appreciative mentioning of an object, vehicle, or action [?]

       (adj./adv.)
"You seen that Escalade EXT with 23s, playa?"
"Fa shizzle, that bitch was SLABBED out"

       (v.)
"I think I'll SLAB my ride, when my mom pays the
               insurance."

2       A slab is a f.cking HUGE American car from the late '60s-late
       '80s like a 66 Impala, 70 Cutlass, 77 Eldo, 82 Fleetwood, 88
Grand Marquis etc. Just a giant "slab" of metal on which you can
floss your Vogues or Triple Gold Daytons. Probably the finest
       examples are late '70s Lacs.

3       an amount of cocaine.

aye folk i need a twenty slab so i can set up shop.

Plus the all-too-familiar 24 cans of beer.

So 'laying slabs' might mean all sorts of non-gay things, gay or
otherwise, to da yoot.

> and why was he reluctant?

He was reluctant because we had been at it for hours and he has a short
attention span. Also diabetes. And he wasn't being paid.

All in all, I think he showed great willing.

I wasn't going to make the quiz obvious.  There are some trick questions.  OK,
so what they they already broke up?  That still doesn't explain whether or not
you think they're going to break up again in 2004.

Is that your way of telling me I spelt his name wrong?  I kinda thought I was
misspelling it, but I didn't care.  He's so pointless that it's not worth my
effort to Goggle David Geust or Gust or Gest or however he spells it's name.
That gay guy that married Liza Minelli!  I think everyone knew who I meant.
Watch SNL if not.

It was a pun, Joey. I never heard of the man. I don't watch TV or follow
who's got his 15 minutes of fame this week/day/hour, or who's shagging
whom.
