After installing and paying for the latest version of AVG's formerly
free virus protection program, I found it to be such an overbearing
nuisance when surfing or downloading, I removed it this morning.
What a pity, for I think many AUE members have found it to be a
reassuring aid, but I recommend you don't spend good money on the
recent incarnation of the product quite yet.

Do a custom install and choose not to install the 'safe browsing'
feature: it's not compulsory. The new interface is much better.

Chuck, you have made a leap by going from the free version of
AVG to the latest of the paid-for versions.

On this PC I have AVG Anti-Virus Pro 7.5 (paid-for).
This causes none of the annoyance you are reporting.

The most recent release of this is AVG Anti-Virus 8.0.

Did you perhaps buy AVG Internet Security 8.0?
This has additional features: Firewall, Anti-spam and System
Tools.

If that is the product you have bought I suspect that it is the
Firewall and perhaps the Anti-Spam features that are causing you
grief.

I'm wondering whether it is possible to install the software
without those features, or to disable them after installation?

No it's the new paid-for version of the antivirus that's causing the
problems - if a default install is done.

What Chuck is complaining of is a tool that checks out web-sites for
malware before you visit them, A google search page takes ages as it
checks out each link. Good idea in theory... In firefox it's installed
as an add-on which can simply be disabled if you've already installed
it. No idea how it's implemented in Gates' PoS.

I have no experience of AVG 8.0 yet. I requires MS Win2000 or
higher. This PC has Win98.  I have two other PCs that could run
it if they were not broken. Even the one bought recently is
faulty.

On this PC I have AVG 7.5, Lavasoft Ad-Watch, and Lavasoft
Firewall giving continuous protection, and I do malware scans
with Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and PCTools Spyware Doctor.

On this PC I have AVG 7.5 (free) and ZoneAlarm Pro (not free).  So
far, so good.  The only thing is that the the wretched machine is
clobbered at the first boot of the day.  Have used BleepingComputer to
try to find what's running at startup but gave up in the end as there
were no obvious candidates for execution.

I recently had occasion to buy a new box (running XP) and
had a devil of a time finding the download link for the free
version of AVG, they (grisoft) go out of their way to hide it and
inveigle you into going with a paid version. But I found it
and it works great (version 7.5)

For anyone who has a problem with AVG (and I'm not sure why they would),
the other free antivirus worth looking at is Avast! (the exclamation is
part of the trademark, I think). They are both good.

Good man.
Like you, I found navigating their site difficult, to say the least. I
may well try their software again, this time getting ver 7.5. I erased
the version I paid for.
I am glad I read your post.

An hour or two after reading the above...done. Thank you very much for
the information, Jitze. I hope this free 8.0 version is less intrusive
than the paid one.
