Has anyone using nntp.aioe.org found that some posts by other people are
only readable through other people's posts?
This appears to be a spotty phenomenon, but I noticed that some of Bob
Lieblich's posts were missing in my download a few days ago, and today,
tony cooper's post (about the back forty) to which HVS responded, did
not arrive in my reader (OE with Quotefix). Seems some of Chuck's are
not arriving as well, since I replied to one of his via a reply from
Draney ( OT Jerry Springer).
I have once again checked my blocked senders list, but, no, no news
blockages to AEU and AUE senders exist there.
Of course, some of my posts may not arrive on the international net, as
well, but how is one to know that?

I have been experiencing severe news problems since the 18th, when my
usual news server at Demon virtually packed up, with delivery to me
falling from around 300 a day in various groups to an average of one.
I switched to collecting a.u.e from aioe.org several days ago, and since
then volume is well down in this group compared to before the 18th.
Taking LFS's (Laura's) posts as a specific example, I have only seen
Laura's posts secondhand since collecting from aioe except in two
instances, both in the "tree-age" thread. One posted on the 19th took
50 hours to reach me, but that could tie in with the delay before I
connected to aioe. The second, posted on the 22nd, took six minutes.
Laura seems to have posted them via news.individual.net. Her other
quoted posts I cannot receive, even requesting them directly from aioe
by their MID.
There seems to be a widespread malaise in news propagation here in
Rightpondia that extends beyond my own provider Demon, though Demon is
particularly badly affected, and the Demon news server seems not to be
talking to the outside world. There is a current thread on
uk.telecom.broadband discussing news problems and the games providers
play, entitled "Are Tiscali blocking 'news.individual.net' in the
evening?"

How dreadful! I would hate you to miss any of my words of wisdom. Or
marmalade.

This may explain why John Dean's post do not get through
to Linz, unless there is a badbloodfile involved.

News appears to be flowing again through the old-fashioned routes, after
a twelve-day local outage, and I am pleased to abandon aioe.org and once
more experience the deluge of RRs' posts. Where was that thread about
drinking from fire hoses?

nntp.aioe.org misses a lot. I keep stats for eight servers on some groups
including this one. For 28 days up to yesterday, fixed pitch recommended:
alt.usage.english
Merged IOL NIN APN ALB AIO MOZ NDD TNV
Total 7571 7020 7533 7569 7536 5955 7546 7504 7532
Avg. 270 251 269 270 269 213 270 268 269
92.72% 99.50% 99.97% 99.54% 78.66% 99.67% 99.12% 99.48%
IOL My ISP's server
NIN news.individual.net - EUR10 p.a.
APN Forté's rebadged Easynews - $2.95 p.m. for 12GB
ALB news.albasani.net - free
AIO news.aioe.org - free
MOZ news.motzarella.org - free
NDD news.datemas.de - free
TNV news.tornevall.net - free
APN is the only one that carries binaries. Of the free ones the two which are
most consistently reliable are MOZ and ALB.
