Hello: This "would never come to any proof" seems Shakespeare, but I don't get it in the context. Could it be that: "(he was afraid that his love) wouldn't become true/real, become concrete" or "(he was afraid that his love) wouldn't be tested." ------- [Hans Castorp's state: love. His not able to hide it, thus he "self- betrays". People are joking about him, and Joachim, his cousin, doesn't know how to protect him.] This was painful for Joachim; but the object of their mirth [Hans Castorp] seemed insensible to his own self-betrayal; perhaps he felt that this state, if concealed and unregarded, would never come to any proof.
