New word/phrase: a "Stay-out-of-prison-baby" + learning Spanish from "Blazing Saddles"

"Stay-out-of-prison-baby" - the term "stay-out-of-prison baby" is used
to refer to babies that are conceived and born to a defendant (the
father or mother) during the time that the defendant is facing
criminal charges and the possibility of prison. It is based on the
idea that defendants deliberately manufacture babies under such
circumstances in order to manipulate the emotions of the sentencing
judge to impose a sentence of probation instead of prison. Believe it
or don't, sentencing hearings are sometimes continued, even
repeatedly, by the defendant's lawyer in an effort to make sure the
child is born and available for the sentencing hearing. Stay-out-of-
prison babies often appear at sentencings in the arms of the non-
prosecuted mother (usually the mother) who delivers a sob story about
needing her husband so that the baby will have his father. It is a
reminder of the child who murders his parents and then pleads for
leniency on the grounds that he is an orphan. Perhaps those parent-
murderers were stay-out-of-prison babies.

I hope it works better than VHS did...I bought a Spanish version of "The Sword
in the Stone" knowing that Disney puts closed-captions on *everything*, even
dialogueless "Chip 'n' Dale" cartoons, only to find that that is only true of
their English output....

The opening scene, with Merlin sweeping out his warren in anticipation of an
unknown visitor, made it clear that they were going for a straight translation
with no attention to wordplay...in the original, the owl Archimedes is saying
"Who? Who? Who's going to visit?"...I've never heard anyone suggest that an
owl's call sounds like ¿Quien? ¿Quien?"...

I'm pleased to see that the Spanish-language television stations are now
captioning shows for the hearing-impaired...this was not always the case, which
was unfortunate because sometimes language learners can understand better when
they can *see* the words written out...last night I watched part of "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in Spanish...the title was given in the English
translation, and the name of the character "Jade Fox" was dubbed as "Jade Fox"
(/hade fOks/); calling her "Zorra" would have changed the connotation
considerably....r
