I don't like either one.
He will still need to work just as hard after he has retired.
He still needs to work just as hard after his retirement.
of He still needs to work just as hard even though he has retired.
"So hard" isn't idiomatic, although I don't think I can explain why.
"Just as hard" compares pre- and post-retirement periods. I can't
think of any unmodified verb form that works with "He still needs."
