Hello:

How do you feel about these?

1) He still needs to work so hard after he (has) retired.
2) He still needs to work so hard after he is retired.

Do you mean,
He will still need to work as hard after he retires.
?
He still needs to work hard even though he is retired.
?

I don't like either one.

He will still need to work just as hard after he has retired.
He still needs to work just as hard after his retirement.
of He still needs to work just as hard even though he has retired.

"So hard" isn't idiomatic, although I don't think I can explain why.
"Just as hard" compares pre- and post-retirement periods.  I can't
think of any unmodified verb form that works with "He still needs."
