Could anyone please tell me the meaning of "niche based products" in
the following sentence:
"Subtle Pharmaceuticals Limited is committed to the development,
manufacturing and marketing of need and niche based products of world
class quality for treatment of diseases."
Thank you in advance.

Products that most people will not want to buy, but a few people will
find them very useful. A niche is a small opening such as a recess
built in a wall, and the metaphor is that the product is designed to
fit that specialized need in the same way that an object might be
designed to fit the small opening.
It should properly be written "need- and niche-based products" (which
is short for "need-based and niche-based products", which in turn is
short for "products based on a need or based on a niche). But these
days a lot of people are leaving out hyphens, making their sentences
harder to understand.

It should read "need-based and niche products". A niche product is one that
has a small market. I don't know what "need-based products" (or "needs-based
products") are.

The OP posted the same question to AEU. I replied quoting from the Wikipedia
article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niche_market
Here is another quote:
Niche marketing is the process of finding and serving profitable market
segments and designing custom-made products or services for them. For big
companies those market segments are often too small in order to serve them
profitably as these market segments often lack economies of scale.
I understand "need and niche based products" to mean products which address
unsatisfied needs in niche areas.
If there is a medical condition that affects only a small number of people,
existing medication for the condition is not very effective, and the potential
sales of improved medication are too small for the major companies to be
interested, then there is a need in a niche.

Okay, but "niche-based product" is still an error.

'niche' in business jargon means 'a special section of the market'.
In your sentence, "niche based products" probably refer to assistive
technology, unusual surgical instruments, devices or equipment that
doctors and specialists used to treat patients or operate on them. The
following is taken from The Handbook of International Financial Terms:
'niche market" is a part of the market which is the domain
of specialists. Niches may include securities with special features,
market sectors, or illiquid or poorly researched issuers.
The major distinguishing factor is informational or pricing
advantages by the specialists (cf. bazaar).

It means there is a limited market. An ordinary cake of soap is generally a
fast moving consumer product which will suit most people, while a
specialized soap may be available for a niche in the market for certain
types of dermatitis.

Like Viagra for people like Murray Arnow or truth serum for people like
Robert Lieblich.
