Hello:

About "on":

"Took me on to"
should probably mean
"Took me further (on) to"
?

Yes. It's comparing the way on thought leads to another to the way a
driver can take you from one town along a highway on (or further on) to
the next.

I would paraphrase "took me on to" as "led me to".

The train of thought engendered by this association with Buster led
