Hello:
Was/Is this "Barnes" a well-known stadium, close to London?
---
[Widmerpool boasting about his sports activities]
'I don't get much time for games now,' he said. 'Though once in a way
I make a point of going down to Barnes, and driving a ball into the
net.'

It's a suburban area in Surrey, southwest of central London (near
Mortlake, Kew, and Richmond).
It's a "good address" -- leafy suburb, and all that -- near the part
of the Thames where they hold the annual Boat Race.

Not a well-known stadium but a district of London which has a sports
club.

I don't think the club is particularly eminent today, but it might have
been better known then (it's been going since about 1920).
