Agreed, although mouth-licking is instinctive submissive behaviour for
the dog. I have found that most dogs catch on quickly that the human
hand is the equivalent of a dog's mouth, and can satisfy the instinct
by licking your hand. Then you just have to remember to wash before
touching things.
My collie, a very proud dog, felt that that was demeaning, and, in
greeting, I had to lay my head beside his instead of giving him my
hand, but there was no question of smooching.

It's much harder to train a bird to do this, but I've seen at least one
person advertising a finger-licking chicken.
