Jerome David Salinger passed away at 91.

Until now I didn't know what "JD" stands for.

I can understand not trusting it for scholarly research, but surely Wikipedia
could have given you this information years ago....r

An optometrist asks whether you see the glass
more full like this?...or like this?

The last time I gave our friend, and Catcher in the Rye, a thought was
pre-Wikipedia and probably pre-Internet.

I wasn't curious enough to make the effort. Besides, I always thought
that people like H.L. Menken or A.S. Byatt want to be known as such,
so it doesn't cost me any effort to respect their wish.

Not to mention Harry S Truman.

One problem, the "S" stands for "S."

I think it used to be the other way around.  The lone "S" was his middle
name, you know.  His signature did include a period, though.  There is a
story about this at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Truman

So the S should not be followed by a period, but he used a period.
Brilliant.

It *is* brilliant, though...his middle name is S (no period)...one writes (or
did, in that era) an initial as the first letter of the name followed by a
period...the first letter of the name S is S...QED....r

Now I see his reasoning. Thank you for the explanation.
