I haven't noticed this being mentioned before - The Book Depository has
11,000 PDFs of printed books for free download:

I've never gissed; do let me know if it's worth it.

Thank you, that's interesting.

Is there an index of them all anywhere? It looks as if you either have
to search for a particular one, or page through 11,000 of them 20 at a
time!

There's a link on that page, at the right, which says "Search Free
Books".  That takes you to:
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/dealsAndOffers/promo/id/100

from where you can "Search within results"

which gives you a search of this sort:
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/dealsAndOffers/promo/id/100?&searchTerm=austen

Yes, that's right. The reason I was interested in an index was that
I'd like to compare this list of books to Gutenberg to see if there
are any here that are not on Gutenberg. With the cumbersome gui, it's
not that easy to find this out.

It might be worth writing to ask them.

Indeed, and if I get a reply, I'll post it here. There are 125 books
by Jerome K. Jerome in Gutenberg, but only 31 in this repository, so I
thought it was a subset, but then I found there was a lot more by
Kant.

I have had a reply and, sadly, they don't currently have an index.

They probably don't want one,
for they intend to start selling ebooks.
They just want to have people visiting their pages
over and over again,
