Hello:

"pitching heart"
does it mean covered by pitch? "Blackening?"

I read it in context as "distressed heart," but ...

----
[Stranahan had expected to find Joey inside the van]

Peering through the tinted glass, Stranahan realized with a pitching
heart that the Suburban was empty.

No, it's the other verb "pitch" in OED sense 14 b:

"Of a ship: to plunge downwards at the bow into the trough of the sea.
Hence also: to rise and fall alternately at bow and stern; to progress
in this manner."

Oh, yeah, I know that one, didn't make the connection.

Thanks.
