While watching the Winter Olympics I noticed that BBC commentators and
experts sometimes put a schwa in the names of two of the events: Ski
Cross and Board Cross.
It turns out that they are "right" and the organisers of the Olympics
are "wrong".
The events were renamed, possibly accidentally, by the International Ski
Federation (FIS) when it took control of them.

Snowboard cross (also Snowboarder X, SBX, Boardercross, Boarder-X or
BX) is a snowboard competition in which ....
Still widely referred to as boardercross by the snowboarding
community, it wasn't until the International Ski Federation (FIS)
(the international governing body for ski and snowboard sports)
assumed control of Olympic snowboarding events that the term
snowboard cross materialized. This was due largely to the language
barrier; when boardercross is translated into the FIS's native
French and back again, snowboard cross emerges as a literal
translation.[citation needed]

Ski cross (also known as skiercross or skier-X) is a type of skiing
competition. It is based on the snowboarding discipline of
boardercross.

I thought boardercross was a favourite activity of illegal migrants between
Mexico and Texas. ;-)

Well, what do you expect from an organization that can't even get
their own initials right? :-)

I had never heard of these events until the current Olympics. But a
few minutes ago, watching a few minutes of ski(er) cross, I put it
together with Peter's article and realized why the name has that
peculiar form.
It's by analogy with "motocross", because all three sports involve a
track with frequent sharp vertical curves that require the contestant
to jump from one part of it to another.
I suppose that to non-rhotic speakers, "motocross" sounds like "motor-
cross", and so the other two sports were named by a change of the first
syllable along.
(And I suppose that "motocross" was so named because it was inspired by
cross-country motorcycle racing without using roads.)
It's obvious now.
