In British English, "dining room" suggests a smaller, more luxuriously
appointed room for the use of senior staff. Most employees would eat in
a canteen.

In the United States, the British "canteen" is almost always called a
"cafeteria." A canteen is solely, in the States, a small water
container used by hiking/camping enthusiasts or military personnel out
in the field.
The word "cafeteria," in several languages, is used to refer to a
coffee shop. I would be willing to bet that this confusion of terms is
what prompted your question.
Then again, I am notoriously poor at the crystal ball game...
