So you don't mind if people want to work for you for no money?  That's
OK is it?

Huh? DJ Cat, do you know something about this outfit that the rest of
us working slobs should know?

(Late reply - hope you pick this up)

Not especially - I just bridle when I see commercial organisations
playing on the desire of younger, newly-qualified (or not qualified at
all) teachers to travel, and being willing to do it for nothing.  China
isn't a third-world nation - if these people want people to work for
them they should pay the going rate.

By the same token: "my house needs painting - volunteers welcome".

Late pickup!

Thanks, DJ, but I've already done too much globe-trotting. My Grand
Tour Abroad is almost over, if I save enough money this year and the
next. The idea of going to China is terrifying and you will not find me
out in the shops sizing Mao jackets any time soon.

All I want right now is a one-way ticket back to the USA, a nice
classroom in a community college somewhere on the East Coast, a
convention here and there, a desk I have to share with four other slobs
like me, and maybe a couple bucks every Saturday night...so I can go
out, pound down a few Rolling Rocks and tell whoppers about what grand
times I had "on the Continent."

I'd shoot someone for a Rolling Rock right about now.

I admire guys like you, though.

Hi,

Re. Wanting to teach ESL, but from the USA:

How effective is the Internet as a remote teaching
technique?  In theory it seems you could teach
remotely via video conferencing from anywhere to
anywhere.  This assumes some minimum level of
computer power and connection speed on both ends.

Do you know how much that is being done and what
the limitations are?

Thanks,
Alan Cobb
