Before you can speak like an American,
you've gotta hear like an American.
The primary obstacle to speaking American well is
the fact that ESL students are listening with
Chinese/Japanese/Korean/etc. ears. (Most of my
students are from Asia.) They do not hear the same
sounds that a native speakers hears.
They need to install a new set of listening filters
in their language machines. Luckily, that not
particularly difficult. It does take practice though...
50 - 200 hours of listening/dictation work.
After a student has learned to hear accurately, he/she
may then correct their own speaking with minimal
assistance from an instructor.
It's crucial to distinguish between ear-training and
mouse-training.
I am presently putting the finishing touches on my
Gendo: ear-training and mouse-training course, and am
looking for a few ESL students who need to improve
their speaking/hearing skills.
I'll be happy to teach them for free during this test
period.
In order to participate, a student will need a Skype
account (www.skype.com) and the ability to listen to
MP3 files.

What if you don't want to speak like an American?
DC. Walk like an Egyptian.

Doesn't EVERYONE want to speak like an American? The world guzzles our
Coke, smokes our cigarettes, copies our fashion, gets laid to our
music, installs our operating systems on their computers...how much
more personal can you get?
Give in to the need...BE all you can be...BE a winner...BE...American!
Disaffected of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your
nationalities! You have an identity to win!
