I was wondering if anybody knows if it's possible to do a PGCE in TEFL
in the UK, and if so, which institutions offer it?

Ideally I would like to do it via distance learning, but no doubt
that's asking too much (unless anybody knows otherwise).

Thanks in advance for any information.

Edinburgh may be launching an MEd in TESOL by distance learning:
http://www.education.ed.ac.uk/crd/tesol/MEd-Online.html

They appear to also do a Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL for 3 months
if asked by a teaching institution - it might be possible for you to
piggy-back on an existing course?

If you just wanted a shorter course look at www.open.ac.uk course ref
E481 which is part of the Master's course. You can take selected parts
of the Master's course and get a Postgraduate Certificate in
Professional Studies in Education - ref C27.
