I disagree. The capitalisation here is appropriate.
However, the phrase "I would like to propose my research in the
following three directions" is clumsy, and the use of "directions" is
wrong. I suggest:
"I propose research in the following areas:"
or, if it's what you meant
"I propose research in one of the following areas:"
