Hi folks,
I've lived in US a few years ago as a AFS exchange student, and while I
still maintaning some good vocabulary and speech, my grammar is not doing so
well.
I have a reasonable level of English and I feel frustrated going back to
English classes just to learn grammar, because usually the classes given at
my country usually mix speech, vocabulary and grammar in the same class (and
most books follow this scheme), it's not what I need. I need something to
WRITE better and comunicate in a more formal way with people...
I would like to hear about a good book that covers all the english grammar
and that provides examples along with the text to exercise the rules. I do
not know if there are anything specific to foreigners, but if there is
something worth I am all open for advice.

ola Henrique,
I am English student and the book I always recommend is English Grammar in
Use. It has only grammar and exercises. The new edition has even an extra
booklet.
There is a post from Ron in this ng dated 06.05.2004. There are more titles
there.
Have you consider to study from a web site to improve your writing? There
are some very good ones..
Irma.

Thanks Irma, I am browsing the book at amazon.com and it seems interesting
(and compact also). I may buy it soon since I am waiting for the results
from an UK scholarship selection comittee and if everything succeeds I will
need to get a a high TOEFL score very soon to enroll a MSc program there. I
have some TOEFL specific preparation material, but it does not help much on
the grammar.
*in 1997 I got a 617 mark on TOEFL but I doubt I can get this mark again w/o
some heavy training...

Now I understand. Well the book is not bad anyway but there are special CD
programs to help you to prepare your TOEFL. I bought it in my local
supermarket and I think it was not more than 5 euros. It's MacMillan
Heinemann.
It is really good. When you answer the first exam, the programm provides
you with the material to study the topics you are weak. The same programs
continues evaluating your progress, while you are studying and working with
exercises. The program asks you to have another exam. In total I think
there are 4 complete exams.
I wish you the best,
Irma.

Hi Irma,
May you check the exact name on the CD case? I am looking at their catalog
(http://www.macmillaneducation.com), but so far haven't found any CD related
material yet.

Hi Henrique,
I was looking for any number but it doesn't have any number I can give you
to buy it. I was told that this supermarket "Aldi" often has this sort of
articles to study just for them. However, I looked for it in ebay.de and I
got it, it is still for 1 euro, but the problem is that the seller doesn't
want to deliver out of Germany.
Here you have the link, maybe if you wrote the seller personally you could
agree with him/her to send it to your country. It's worth a try :-) I
think.

I got also some information about this material in amazon.de. here you have
the link

They have one course for 11 euros with two cds. and many more courses. I
think in this case amazon could give you more information about these sort
of courses.
I really hope this will help you...
Irma.
P.S. I hope the link are ok. They are very long....
