We have several dictionaries, but probably 1/4 or more of the words I
look up are not in there. I read a lot and like to look up any word I
am not totally sure of. Because I have been reading and looking up
words my entire adult life, the words I look up tend to be unusual or
rarely used words. Sometimes, they are derivatives of foreign words or
phrases. We do have a hardcover Webster's 3rd New International in the
living room and that one is better when I can use it. But
.It is so
large and heavy that it is not practical beside the bed, in the truck,
camping etc.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there a dictionary that has obscure, lesser
used words and foreign derivatives and leaves out the majority of
common English words that I would never have to look up?

Just do a google search for the word. That usually
brings up dictionary/encyclopedia definitions.

I need something for when I am not on the computer.
Thing is that a big coffee table dictionary with 500,000 words
probably contains 300,000 words that the average person would never
need to look up. (like all the words in this post). A well read person
would probably never need 400,000 of those words. If I could take a
dictionary with 600,000 words and edit it to only the 200,000 less
common words, I would have exactly what I want!

D'you mean a dictionary full of bodaciously difficult words and
sesquipedalian terms of the sort which gives the fantods to
cruciverbalists and makes atrabilious people more prone to cacography?
;-)
[Just lollygagging!]

Cute! But... that is exactly what I want. A dictionary with these
and only these types of words. If I get a dictionary with most of the
obscure words I need to look up, it is too big to keep in the car or
by the bed.
