"come to know"

in the below sentence?

what does "came to know" mean?

example 1:
He came to know great architects and builders.

example 2:
How did you come to know
about this site?

The process or cause of someone going from ignorance to knowledge.

If you were talking about knowing a fact, you could often use the verb
'to learn'.

> example 1:
> He came to know great architects and builders.

This might mean: his work brought him into contact with architects and
builders. Knowing / being acquainted with a person isn't the same as
knowing a fact, so you couldn't use 'learn'.

> example 2:
> How did you come to know
> about this site?

To know *about* something usually means knowing the fact of something's
existence, so you can use 'learn'.

How did you come to know about this site?
How did you find out about this site?
How did you learn of this site?
  --  I found it using a search engine
  --  I saw it advertised
