Something like that. Though I find 'plant the evidence' to suggest that
there is no genuine evidence of guilt but someone has introduced something
that would pass as evidence. For example, putting small traces of explosives
one someone's clothes to suggest they were involved in terrorism.
'Plant the information' has, to me, more the ring of taking genuine evidence
but putting it where it would more easily be found. Thus, seeing someone
drop a weapon, picking it up and later hiding it in their house.
Not that I condone either practice.
Nor suggest that anyone behaves like that.

"Plant the information [about that girl]" suggests to me that someone is
passing along a story or rumor or even a fact about the person ("that
girl" in this case), hoping to have it "get around."

In a way, it's much like "plant the evidence," in that the information,
like the evidence, is meant to be made known for a particular reason.
The reason could be anything, good or bad. Usually, it's not good.

Leaving "that girl" out of it, "planting the information" could mean
starting a rumor that involves, say, a workplace. For instance, someone
who wished to stir up trouble might plant the story that a lay-off is
coming, or that the boss is selling the business.

Is there not a TV programme on British TV that 'recreates' serious unsolved
crimes and gives a phone number which guarantees anonymity to callers who
have information about them? The police get a majority of their important
arrests from paid informers and anonymous calls, so I've read.

Yes, you don't give us very much to go by, but I would guess that
someone put false information into the girl's file, where the
authorities would find it later. Maybe they put a piece of paper into
her file folder, or maybe they tampered with her computerized records.

Planting information is also something that spin doctors do. People like
Peter mandelson were notorious for making sure that the right
information was leaked to teh right journalists so as to get the right
spin on the story (positive or negative depending on the story).
