It is used in speech.  It is generally written as '' or -do-.

It is rumoured that in the online version of the 1901 census (transcription
of which was outsourced - to Sri Lanka, I believe) there are many families
where everyone except the head of the household has the surname Ditto...

Awesome, indeed. So you write it            "     or   -do- .
Although here in this list I shouldn't compare it with my language :-)
however in Poland we write        -||-    and sometimes especialy when there
is an activity with some repetition students keep asking if they can use it.
A long time ago I was taught at highschool by some bored teacher that you
Enlish do not use this sign. Obviously, my teacher was mistaken.
Fortunately, my English native teacher at Warsaw University corrected my way
of thinking.

Pawel
P.S. Whew, I guess we started our cooperation anew.

Merry Christmas to you, too Pawel - I often wonder if there is an
internationally-agreed word in the English-speaking world to describe
the last letter of your Christian name, which is an L with a line
through it. I've heard it referred to as a 'dark L', but I wonder if
there is another term?

Only one additional remark. We spell it exactly as you spell w, so if I want
you to spell my name in Polish I would write it Paaveeww: if you use
Microsoft Sam - speech device in your XP system, then it is what I say in
Polish

Paaveeww
