Oh no, wrong joke. Sorry.
Young Sociolinguist - 24 Mar 2006 11:42 GMT Ich wuensche dir viel Spass, Herr/Frau/Fraeulein viper (sorry, I can't use German signs here). Where exactly do you come from?
John of Aix - 25 Mar 2006 00:19 GMT > Ich wuensche dir viel Spass, Herr/Frau/Fraeulein viper (sorry, I can't > use German signs here). You can actually. Hold down the ALT key and at the same time type in the ASCII code for the character. ASCII means American Standard Code for Information Interchange and os pretty universal in computing. Each letter and sign (there are 256 in this system, 0 to 255) has a corresponding number. The normal letters, 26 small (Alt 97 upwards), 26 capitals (Alt 65 upwards ) and various others; such as punvtiation marks, parentheses and of course, numbers. The accented characters start around Alt 129 but aren't very sequential or organised. You can probably find a list and their corresponding ASCII number on the web easily enough. a search with "Ascii codes" should do it.

> Sorry, it doesn't work. Perhaps Cental European coding installed on my > computer as a default setting has something to do with it. Hmm, don't think so. As I say, it is pretty universal as far a I know. You must hold the Alt key down while typing the number (which appears when you release the Alt key). Sometimes though it wan't a 0 before the number, so perhaps try that;

I particularly like the hatted Ws at 129 & 130, and the hatted Ys at 133 & 134. The single quotes at 144 & 145, and the double quotes at 148 & 149 should be quite useful, as should the ellipsis at 140

I am using RISC OS, though, on a Risc PC.
But shouldn't the Euro be at 128? The OE lig. is at 154 and 155. Anyway, it illustrates the danger of assuming all platforms always use the same standards, especially when positions 128 to 159 aren't defined in those standards.

Paul Burke - 29 Mar 2006 08:29 GMT > John A Green > Leigh, Lancashire or Aberdeen Has Leigh taken to going walkabout then? I agree its original location was none too salubrious, but the Aberdeen Branch of the Leeds and Liverpool could be quite heavily locked.

I changed it from Leigh & Aberdeen because someone said I could not be in both locations at the same time. I suppose I must now change it to: "in either Leigh, Lancashire or in Aberdeen - or possibly somewhere between". Any suggestions?

Actually, people often think I'm sixteen or eighteen and I truly hate it. Maybe when I'm fifty I'll appreciate the fact. I'm not sure what pole dancing is, but it reminds me of a Swedish custom practised on Midsummer Night, but unknown in my country. As to jokes, I had to write an e-mail in French last night and thought that the language I used was in fact "French polish."
