When I was in Leftpondia, we called the legal claiming of amounts from someone's pay "garnishee-ing". (AFAIK the term's not used in the UK, where it's an "attachment of earnings".) The verb was colloquially used in an entirely regular manner:

What is the meaning you see in the "step to it" here? ------ [This is a passage written by Cass Mastern in his journal during the Civil War era, thus the language must be appropriate, I assume]
