Two minutes ago I heard a Fox News reporter explain that three mine
rescue workers are in three different hospitals in Utah. He summed up:
"So, three workers are in the hospital today."
In this example it would seem that the American "the" not only carries

I haven't posted for a little while (and haven't read very many posts),
but I've kept some notes on matters that may be worth a discussion.
1. When in church _for services_, a person will say "I'm in church."
Whichever tense is used, there's no article. Church. Not "the" church.

It's frustrating in doing a crossword puzzle to have a
section in which everything fits except one string that
seems to be impossible to be a valid word.  This morning it
was "MRPIBB", with the clue "Coca-Cola product".  I
