Celebrating the Death31 Aug 2009 22:02 GMT35
A local San Francisco radio talkshow host used the phrase "celebrating the
death of Senator Ted Kennedy," meaning to commemorate.
A Usenet poster suggests that he should have said, "celebrating the life..."
instead and that "celebrating the death" was downright wrong.
I didn't know about this31 Aug 2009 21:48 GMT10
I'd have expected to see
"I haven't known about this"
as this is BrE, and in BrE I think I know that the perfect present is
more favored re situations leading to the present time (anyway, more
Is not that true?31 Aug 2009 21:39 GMT12
Do you feel a difference between:
1). Is that not true?
2). Is not that true?
I feel some stress in 1 on "that" being the point, the 2nd being more
Alum31 Aug 2009 21:08 GMT11
I've got this slang word:
alum, the n. [late 19C] (US) the ideal, exactly what one desires. ..
not sure if it fits here.

capitalization of methods/models31 Aug 2009 17:03 GMT7
I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for CMS 15. Should I
capitalize the names of methods or models? For example: the Bull’s Eye
Model for Affective Development and the Torrance Tests of Creative
Thinking.

I should be obliged if someone will confirm how the word *Verde*, as in Cape
Verde Islands, should be pronounced.
Thanks.

The emerged Daimler30 Aug 2009 16:07 GMT2
The "emerged," does it relate here to:
- showing up surprisingly in the modest neighbourghood?
- getting into the way of the traffic? (I see this as less probable,
but ...)
'past' as a postposition30 Aug 2009 14:14 GMT18
I'm wondering when, if ever, the use of the word "past" as a
postposition (following a noun) is acceptable.
Here is the sentence:
"Interwoven with these historical currents lies also the philosophical
To whom much is given...30 Aug 2009 01:49 GMT9
I just heard the expression, "To whom much is given much is expected",
during the Ted Kennedy service tonight, but it seems to me it's not
quite grammatical.
Shouldn't it be something like, "From him to whom much is given much

Is that sentence correct? Or should it be "there are"?
